Description

Sorbitol, also called D-sorbitol, D-glucitol or E420 (CAS 50-70-4), is a sugar alcohol — a carbohydrate belonging to the group of polyols. It occurs naturally in fruits such as apples, apricots, dates, berries, peaches, plums and figs, and is produced commercially from corn syrup for use in packaged foods, beverages and medicines.

Sorbitol is water-soluble, roughly half as sweet as sucrose, and is valued less as a pure sweetener than as a multi-functional ingredient: it preserves moisture, adds a mild sweetness, contributes body and texture, and is non-cariogenic — it is not fermented by oral bacteria, which is why it is common in sugar-free confectionery and oral care products.
